Single Will
A single Will is for one person. You can make a single will regardless of your marital status. At 1st Line, we can assist you every step of the way and advise you appropriately of what is required when creating your Will document.
What does a single will do?
A single will ensures you:
- Name the people, charities or organisations who you want to leave your assets to when you die, these are called beneficiaries.
- Decide how you want to split the things you own amongst them.
- Appoint Guardians – These will be the people who look after your children when you pass (Given that they have not reached the age of 18).
- Give details about specific gifts you want to pass on.
- Decide upon the executors, these are the people who take care of your estate and carry out the wishes within your will when you pass.
Your will should set out:-
- Who you want to benefit from your will
- Who should look after any children under 18
- Who is going to sort out your estate and carry out your wishes after your death
- What happens if the people you want to benefit die before you or are otherwise unable to benefit from your will

Mirror Wills
Mirror Wills are nearly identical wills created on behalf of civil, married or unmarried couples. They are virtually identical, where one member of the couple leaves their estate to the other in the event of their death.
Your partner inherits everything. Mirror wills are very similar documents drafted for couples that mutually agree to leave their whole estate to the last surviving partner if one of them dies. By agreeing to a Mirror Will you are protecting your partner’s financial future, as they may not be legally entitled to inherit your estate if you are unmarried.
If you are looking to provide for your children a Mirror Will can include instructions for both partners estates to be left to any surviving children should the couple die at the same time. If you have children below the age of 18 you can appoint guardians for them in your Mirror Wills, should both parents die. You can also appoint trustees who will protect and look after your estate until your children are old enough to inherit it.
Mirror wills don’t have to be completely identical; the key element is that both partners have similar desires and terms in their wills. They can however make small differences, when it comes to estate administration and inheritance issues they need to match.

Joint Wills
For most married couples a joint will is usually the best option. This allows each of you to write your own individual wishes without having to pay for two separate wills. A joint Will is made up of two individual Wills – one for each person in the relationship. This gives you the freedom to either echo each other’s wishes or write your own, depending on what’s right for you.
When writing joint wills, most couples choose to mirror each other’s wishes for things they share responsibility or ownership for. This includes things like:
- Appointing the same legal guardians for your children.
- Choosing the same people to look after your pets.
- Dividing up your estate in the same way.
Each partner may then decide to leave more personal wishes in other parts of their Will, including:
- Leaving a specific gift to a loved one.
- Donating to a charity that’s particularly close to your heart
- Appointing executors of your Will
- Writing messages of farewell to family and friends
- Leaving funeral wishes so your family know what you would have wanted.
